Formica was created in 1912 when an engineer was experimenting with coating fabric with resin then curing it until it produced a hard surface. It was originally intended to be used as an insulating material for electrical components. The founder had no idea at the time that the name Formica would become a household name with hundreds of different uses. Today there are literally thousands of variations when it comes to Formica counter and work tops but the basic creating process is still the same today. The two basic things used in Formica production are resin and paper. The paper is saturated with resin and allowed to dry. After it is dry the layers are stacked and pressed together under heat. This process cures the resin under a high temperature and pressure which is then formed into a single sheet of laminate.

Although the process sounds fairly simple, Formica takes great care to produce a high quality finished product which is durable and provides function as well. They pay close attention to all of the details and use only Formica approved products in the process. The paper must be perfectly uniform in weight so the finished product will have a smooth and even surface. They have the ability to produce a high gloss surface or a more sedate matte surface. The high gloss surfaces will probably endure greater wear and is easier to clean but many people prefer the lower gloss finish which is seen in many homes today.

Today Formica produces one of the most beautiful and durable surfaces for cabinet and benchtops. It works great for counter tops, wet bars, vanity tops, and even table tops. The finished top is non-porous and has proven to be resistant to heat and stains. You can get just about any design or pattern you desire including the look of marble and granite.

Formica is fairly easy to care for which makes it highly desirable. Usually a damp cloth and mild soap will be all that is needed to clean your Formica surface. It is not recommended for you to use cleaners which contain strong acids such as those used to clean ovens and stove tops. If you have a matte or satin finish you will be able to use a mild abrasive cleanser if needed. For high gloss finishes you should not need to use anything abrasive since high gloss is easily cleaned with soap and water. If you use an abrasive cleaner on your Formica top it is advisable that you go over the entire surface in order to maintain the uniform appearance of the surface.

It is recommended that you use a trivet before setting hot pans on any Formica surface since excessive heat may cause surface damage. It is not recommended that you use your Formica work top as a cutting board since this could cause scaring. It is recommended that you get another piece of Formica to use as a cutting board since it provides an excellent surface to prepare food on.
